What is SCR 17?
SCR 17 (Senate Concurrent Resolution 17) is a state measure to formally recognize the flag of the old South Viet Nam as "a symbol of the Vietnamese Americans in the State of California that represents freedom, human rights and democracy."
Why is SCR 17 BAD for the VA community?
- It's presumptous to speak for ALL Vietnamese Americans;
- It's a lie (South Viet Nam did not have freedom, human rights or democracy);
- It's divisive, while ignoring the diversity in our community;
- It's confusing (to teach children to honor the flag of a gov't that no longer exists);
- It's none of the state's business to tell us what flag represents us;
and...
IT TAKES US AWAY FROM ADDRESSING THE REAL ISSUES OF OUR COMMUNITY!!!
At this forum, we'll watch a skit, discuss the issue, brainstorm ways to defeat SCR 17, and generally organize a progressive Viet Am community in the Bay Area.
